Nanna Belt - English Knitting Pattern

Nanna is a decorative belt featuring a pattern taken from a pair of traditional mittens knitted by Nanna Guttorm from Ildskog in Porsanger in the 1960s, which is how the belt got its name.

Nanna Guttorm was Kven, born and raised in Ildskog in Porsanger. She was a skilled craftswoman in sewing, weaving and knitting, and many people in Porsanger wore traditional Sámi garments made by her skilled hands.

The pattern motif is sourced from Porsangervotten by Bitten Sarre et al., published by Porsanger Husflidslag in 2014.

Nanna is a fitted knitted belt, which means that achieving the correct gauge is particularly important to ensure that the belt fits the wearer’s waist properly.

The pattern includes a formula for calculating the required number of stitches based on the wearer’s waist measurement and knitting gauge.

Once the belt has been knitted, a strip of belt backing tape is sewn to the inside to help it keep its shape.
