In Sami clothing tradition, there are many beautiful head coverings. In the design for Gahpir, I wanted to approach the look of a type of hat worn by women in several areas of Sápmi. This is a close-fitting hat with earflaps that are then tied with ribbons under the chin. This creates a hat that is both warm and practical when spending time outdoors in winter.
The pattern border in the hat is from the book Sami Mittens from Tana Valley – Deanuleagi sámefáhcat by Kirsti-Synnøve Suongir.
