Article in Ságat 24 September 2024:
"In her book 'Sápmi Knit,' Siv Romsdal undertakes an educational and highly fascinating journey to other times, other places – to discover traditional Sami knitting patterns that she can pass on to others and use to further develop her own designs."
Article in Vårt Land 25 November 2024:
"This isn't something I can claim for myself." This is how Siv Romsdal had always thought about her Sámi heritage.
It was no secret that her family was Coastal Sámi, but no one had worn a gákti since her great-grandparents.
She herself had learned neither the language nor the traditions. She therefore felt that she was not entitled to say that she was
Sámi.
But Romsdal loved to knit, and she began experimenting with designing sweaters inspired by Sámi culture.
– And when I started reading about the Norwegianization policy and how others in a similar situation felt, I realized that I too could take ownership of it in my own way, says Romsdal.
She opens the book she has just published: Sápmi knitting is much more than a regular craft book.
The book is packed with stories and legends, and shows that even knitting patterns have an origin...
Sápmi Knitting - Critics' Favorite in Vårt Land 2024
"Just" a knitting book, you might think? Oh no, Siv Romsdal guides you through Sami history, culture, and worldview, while at the same time creating designs based on both traditional patterns and playful interpretations of the Nordic Cap's nature and symbolism. [...] stands out from the crowd.
Critics' favourites for the 2024 book year in Vårt Land
Article in Ságat 3 October 2025:
"In the second book, "Sápmi strikk 2," she continues her journey...
What makes Romsdal's work special is that she doesn't just create beautiful clothes – she gives the patterns roots and history. Through the texts in the books combined with the patterns, she offers a deeper layer: knitting becomes a gateway to Sami culture and local history.
She states in an interview with NRK Sápmi that she wants to perpetuate Sami cultural heritage in a modern way, where knitting becomes both identity-building and a way to share stories."

My books
Sápmi Knit
The journey takes us through the polar night and northern lights, cloudberry bogs and summer plains, to Karesuando, Máze, Varanger, Jukkasjärvi, Billefjord and Kautokeino.
The result is a feast of colors and patterns that are just as suitable for the plains as for the city. The book contains knitting patterns for sweaters, cardigans, socks and mittens.
Sápmi Knit 2
The book is packed with inspiring images and beautiful nature, interspersed with stories from Sápmi – about the Sámi polar explorers, and about traditions related to fishing, the weather, superstition, and women's communities.
A feast of a knitting book – suitable for everyone!
