Silver holds deep symbolic meaning in Sámi culture and has long been associated with protection against evil spirits. Traditionally, it has been important to own a šiella, a good-luck amulet, often made of silver, to protect the wearer from evil. Silver jewelry has been used by the Sámi since the Middle Ages, and the piece most closely associated with traditional Sámi dress is the Risku - brooch. It is said that the design of the brooch represents the sun’s journey across the sky above Sápmi, reflecting the endless daylight of the summer months north of the Arctic Circle.
Risku is worked from the top down with a circular yoke. The body can be worked in either a cropped or regular length.
