Silver has strong symbolic meaning for the Sámi people and is associated with, among other things, protection against evil forces. In Sámi culture, it is important to have a "šiella" object, a lucky amulet often made of silver, as protection against evil. Silver as a material for jewelry has been used by the Sámi since the Middle Ages, and the silver jewelry most strongly associated with the Sámi is Risku – the Brooch. It is said that the design of the brooch represents the sun's path across the Sámi sky, as it travels across the sky, making the day everlasting during the summer months north of the Arctic Circle.
