Silver holds strong symbolic meaning for the Sámi and is associated, among other things, with protection against evil forces. In Sámi culture, it is important to have a šiella object, a lucky amulet often made of silver, as protection against evil. Silver as a jewelry material has been used among the Sámi since the Middle Ages, and the silver jewelry most strongly associated with the Sámi is the Risku – Sølja. It is said that the design of the brooch represents the sun's path across the Sámi sky, as it traverses the heavens and makes the day everlasting in the summer months north of the Arctic Circle.
