Ulda is a figure from Sámi mythology – beautiful, kind and helpful, but with a darker side as well. She belongs to the underground beings and, according to old stories, could lure people into their world.

To protect oneself from Ulda, people could carry a silver button or a komsekule – a silver ball hung above the komsa, the cradle, to protect children from the underground beings.

Ulda is the daughter of the hálddit, spirits or beings who live in our world but cannot be seen. In Sámi tradition, it was important to show respect for the underground beings and the places where they might dwell.
