One of the Sámi names for the Northern Lights is Guovssahas, meaning “the audible light.” It was said that the ancestors lived in the Northern Lights, and that the crackling sound heard as the lights danced across the sky was the sound of the ancestors’ souls.

Yarn, needles, and gauge

Yarn: Varde and Luna by Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk

Gauge: 18 stitches = 10 cm

Suggested needles: 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm needles.
Circular needles, 40, 80 and 100 cm, and optional 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves.

Note: The white version is worked with Luna as Color 1 and Varde as Colors 2, 3 and 4. The dark version is worked entirely in Varde.

About the recipe

Construction: Guovssahas is worked from the bottom up with a circular yoke shaped with decreases.

Fit: Guovssahas is a unisex design. The body and sleeve lengths can be adjusted as desired.

Technique: The sweater is worked in the round in stockinette stitch and stranded colorwork.
