Siv Romsdal hails from Nordkapp in Finnmark, with ancestral roots in Porsanger. It was only as an adult that she became aware of her own Sea Sámi identity. As in many families, this part of history had been tucked away and partly forgotten in the wake of the assimilation policy.
However, in many attics, one can find traces of Sámi craft traditions in old garments or older photographs. Siv draws on the work of women before her to preserve and pass on the legacy of their foremothers. On her journey through yarn and colours, she has developed knitwear that incorporates details from old Sámi patterns. She has also been inspired by the nature and culture she grew up in to create new knitting designs. Her journey takes her through the polar night and northern lights, cloudberry bogs and summer plains, to Karesuando, Máze, Varanger, Jukkasjärvi, Billefjord, and Kautokeino.
The result is a celebration of colours and patterns that are equally at home on the plains or in the city. The book contains knitting patterns for sweaters, gáktis, socks, and mittens.
